Activities
The Bothongo WonderCave
Italian miners discovered the WonderCave in 1898 and mined out about 15% of its calcite formations before mining stopped in 1902. Today it is South Africa’s third-largest cave chamber, after the Cango and Sudwala Caves, and between 5 and 10 million years old, with formations up to 15 m high.
You go down 87 steps at a 45-degree angle to 22 metres below the surface, then an elevator takes you a further 18 metres into the cave. No crawling is needed. Tours start every two hours, at 09:00, 11:00, 13:00 and 15:00. Bookings are essential: please arrive at least 15 minutes before your tour.
Health notice: caves can carry a risk of histoplasmosis, a fungal lung infection caused by inhaling spores where bat or bird droppings are present.
